Bringing Bollywood to Moorpark
April 17, 2014
Throughout all the excicetment of Multicultural Day, the events that students and the Moorpark College community participated in seemed to have a lasting effect. Or so was the case with “Bangla Bliss,” instructed by Komal Tejwani on April 15 in the Dance Studio in the Performing Arts Center.
Students who came to participate in the dance class knew it would not be an easy feat. Bangla dancing is a high energy and high impact form of dancing typical of Indian culture, mostly seen in Bollywood films. Tejwani, a freelance instructor for Moorpark College, was prepared for the participants’ reactions to this dance.
“I taught the Zumba class [earlier today] so this should be fun,” said Tejwani.
Tejwani led the class in a bright, traditional Indian outfit that put a personal touch in instructing. The class started out with Tejwani teaching the students slow, fluid dance moves that would eventually require faster movement. After a few moves, Indian music would play and the participants followed Tejwani’s lead. This methodical form of teaching dance proved to be effective, as every participant picked up the moves quickly, despite the intensity of the dance.
Although Tejwani made it look simple, the participants tried their best and were able to perform an entertaining dance at the end of the class.
“I have never been so tired in my life,” said Communications major Katie Pearson, 21. “It was such a great experience though; I’d love to do that again.”
Everyone, including Tejwani, was satisfied with the outcome of a performance that just took over an hour to put together.
The participants in the class included seemingly professional or experienced dancers to students who just wanted to try the class for fun. Regardless of their expertise in dance, each participant walked out of the dance class exhausted but happy to have tried out such a popular and interesting dance.
