Moorpark College has named a new men’s basketball head coach, the fourth in Raider history.
It was announced Thursday, via press release, that former San Diego State Assistant Coach Gerred Link, has been named as the new Raider coach.
Link is the successor to former head coach Remy McCarthy, who announced his retirement after 17 years.
“I’m excited about the unique opportunity to lead this program, especially following Coach McCarthy,” saidLink.
The new Raider coach has a lot to live up to, following one of the best if not the best Moorpark coach of all time, but Athletic Director Howard Davis has a lot of confidence in the hire.
“Gerred is a young coach that comes very highly recommended by top quality basketball people,” said Davis. “He has all the skills needed to be an excellent head coach. We are really excited about what he will bring to the program.”
Link, as a multi-sport athlete, competed at Grossmont College in El Cajon. He was an All-Pacific Coast Conference selection in both basketball and tennis.
Linkspent the last two years as an assistant coach at the University of California San Diego, leading the Tritons to the playoff tournament in his first year. Link is a Los Angeles native, and holds a degree in Kinesiology at Sonoma State.
Link is excited by the opportunity of coaching the young Raider club, who will utilize returning conference all-stars Shaquille Moore and Austin Howell.
“My first order of business is to connect with Shaq and Austin and re-recruit them,” said Link. “They are fantastic kids and players and I’m fortunate to have them on board. Shaq and Austin put us in a position to compete for a conference title next season.”
