On April 24, 2014 the Flex Club hosted the second annual Pentathlon at Moorpark College. The Pentathlon was an event in which students would compete in five different physical activities. Students had to pay to get into the event, but half of the proceeds went to the Paralyzed Veterans of America foundation.

The five events in the pentathalon were barrier rabbits, battle jacks, tire flips, tire haul, and viper joust. The event had 130 male and female students competing in the competition along with many spectators watching the event.

“We are excited about the second annual Pentathlon here at Moorpark,” said Advisor Jeff Kriel. “We have five different events going on, and we are looking to see more people that we had this year then we did last.”

The event’s success was partly due to the interest of students that surrounded the event, who wanted to see what was going on in the quad and why it was happening.

“We wanted to get students to be active in something,” said Flex club member Alex Renaud. “We rarely have big events like this here at Moorpark…we want to keep the students here on campus instead of going to class and then going home [and] doing nothing.”

Even though the students may not have placed high in the competition, they still felt they were rewarded from the event. Other students did it to test themselves and get a work out for the day, like student Hayden Clark.

“I just like physical fitness,” said Clark. “I saw this and wanted to try it out”

Some students received extra credit for competing and took the opportunity to do so, Anna Scholuebbers was one of these students. She still saw this as a way to help her work out and move forward physically.

“I get extra credit in the class,” said Scholuebbers. “Though it is good to see where I am [at] physically.”

The Pentathlon was crowning two winners in this event. One for women and one for men who scored the highest of all the events. The woman who scored highest was Crystal Parks and the man was Joey Brinton. Prizes were also handed out to second and third places. As well with those who were named most inspirational in doing the workouts.

The Flex Club encourages people to come out to the event all the time, and want to know what their club is all about.

“So many people have a small idea of what fitness is,” said Renaud. “Flex reaches out to everyone, not just gym-rats and athletes.”

The Flex Club will be looking to host another event this fall on campus, and will be looking forward to the 3rd Annual Pentathlon next spring.
