Families from all over the Moorpark community gathered on Oct. 18 to enjoy of a fun afternoon which included booths and activities for everyone at Discovery Day, hosted by the Child Development Center.
“We had over 300 people in attendance and raised close to $2000 for the Child Development Center enrichment program,” said event coordinator and Child Development Center Supervisor Bonnie Baruch.
The event included hands-on sensory games and activities for the kids, tours of the facility, a boutique, and even a book fair.
One favorite and unique activity for the children was titled Rainbow Stew.
Child Development major, Sam Birch was in charge of this booth. Sugar, corn starch, water, and water color were all mixed together under plastic and tape. Children were invited to walk and jump across it. The result was a unique piece of rainbow art, that parents and children could both enjoy.
“This is so cold and squishy!” exclaimed 6-year-old, Wyatt.
Another squishy activity offered was called Goop. Child Development major and student teacher, Andrina Morales, ran the gooey activity. It was white goo created by mixing corn starch and water.
Parents were also specifically encouraged to allow their children to paint their own faces, in the hopes of allowing self-expression and creativity.
An excited 3-year-old, Kara, turned and said “I’m a zombie!”
The main goal of the event was to raise funds and awareness of the wonderful preschool on campus and the Child Development Center and Program.
“Several families inquire[d] about enrolling for the spring,” Baruch said.
Discovery Day proved to be a great success, bringing joy and laughter to the community, while also raising funds and awareness for the Child Development Center.
Many families enjoyed the day and discovered wonders about their children– a success of its own.
