November 12, 2014
Although award season does not begin until early next year, Oscar buzz films are beginning to hit theaters everywhere. The movies creating buzz for Best Picture are starting to be released and students could not be more excited to see the incredible motion pictures.
First up on the list is the highly awaited movie on the list is the fantasy driven “Into the Woods,” directed by Rob Marshall. This film follows the story of a witch, played by Meryl Streep, that conspires to teach life lessons to characters from popular children’s stories. These include Little Red Riding Hood, played by Lilla Crawford, Cinderella, played by Anna Kendrick, Jack and the Beanstalk, played by Daniel Huttlestone, and Rapunzel, played by Mackenzie Mauzy.
“(The costumes) look pretty sweet from what I’ve seen, they aren’t over the top and I think Maleficent was better in that area, but they are still incredible. It’s Disney and I wouldn’t expect anything less,” said history major and aspiring costume designer Faith Jones, 20.
Next on the list is Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar,” starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Jessica Chastain. This film follows a group of explorers that make use of a newly discovered wormhole to push through the limitations of human space travel.
“I found it very interesting that Nolan used the theory of Einstein-Rosen bridges to tell the story of the astronauts to go further into the universe than anyone has ever before,” said engineering major Joey Broquist, 20.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Inherent Vice.” is another movie on the list. This film, which is based on the novel of the same name, describes a 1970 drug-fueled Los Angeles detective that investigates the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend. Detective Larry “Doc” Sportello is played by Joaquin Phoenix.
“(Inherent Vice) looks awesome and intense,” said film major Josh Mason, 21.
Another anticipated film is Tim Burton’s “Big Eyes” starring Amy Adams and Chrisoph Waltz. “Big Eyes” describes the awakening and success of painter Margaret Keane, played by Adams, and the legal difficulties she encounters with her husband Walter Keane, played by Waltz.
“The art is incredible and I agree with the statement in the movie that ‘the eyes are the windows to the souls,” said art major Lisa Becker, 20.
Last but not least on the list is “Foxcatcher,” directed by Bennett Miller. The film is based on a true story of an Olympic Wrestler. The movie stars Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, and Mark Ruffalo.
“It seems like it is really going to capture the desperation to win and be seen in serious competitive sports,” said kinesiology major Mark Johnson, 19.
This year is bringing amazing Oscar-worthy movies to theaters. Students can explore the various films to feel inspired in their own lives. From art films to science fiction, this Oscar season is bringing in a variety of cinematic masterpieces.
