Moorpark College students presented the Fall Forensics Showcase on Dec. 2 in the Performing Arts Center. The hour-long show had selected students from the Speech and Debate team perform persuasive, informative, and two impromptu or limited preparation speeches.
The house was packed as the night began. The first speech of the night was a creative informative speech about the pros and cons of solar roadways.
With the first speech out of the way, the nerves seemed to calm with the performers. Next on the list was speaker Matt Steck, who was nothing short of incredible. He received a quote from the audience then was given about a minute to prepare before delivering it flawlessly.
With many awards under his belt, Steck said he practices “four or five times a day.”
The evening of talent surprised most audience members. Sherry Chen, 18, was very surprised by what she saw.
“I was really impressed,” said Chen. “I didn’t think it would be that good.”
The night went on to include a persuasive speech about the controversial rape victim from Columbia University and another limited preparation speech about Ferguson.
Speech and debate coach Neal Stewart said this kind of talent doesn’t just happen overnight.
“It’s a combination of practicing on your own and making coaching appointments a few hours a week,” said Stewart.
The team has had extensive National success in the past and hopes to continue their winning streak in April for another round at Nationals.
The Fall Showcase was a clear indication to the team’s consistent streak of success.
