Moorpark College men’s soccer squad was badly beaten, 7-0, in a Western State Conference make up game played early Monday afternoon at Santa Monica College.
The Corsairs scored early and often against the Raiders and netted five goals in the first half alone. It added two second half goals for good measure.
“We played a very good team; probably one of the better teams that we’ve played,” Head Coach Sean Roche said. “Even though they scored, we played well.”
Stuart Sloan opened the scoring for the home team in the fifth minute, sending an early message that it meant business. Sloan struck again when he converted a penalty kick in the 15th minute. The roof caved in on the Raiders when its defense conceded three additional goals to make it 5-0 before halftime.
Goals by Claodio Maaloof in the 20th and Richard Perez in the 35th were followed by Jason Bautista’s in the 40th minute.
It got uglier in the second half. Gabriel Torres converted on a penalty kick in the 55th and Thomas Tranberg completed the rout in the 70th minute.
Eyewitness reports said that goalkeeper Allan Montalvo made several critical saves in a lost cause, but his defensive line allowed the Corsairs’ offense to run wild over the visitors on the unfamiliar artificial surface.
“In the second half, they just overran us,” Roche concluded. “On their surface, the [artificial] turf is always warm.”
