Raiders hogtied 7-0 by Vaqueros in men’s soccer
November 19, 2015
In its second blowout loss within a week, the Raiders (2-12-2) were trounced 7-0 by the Vaqueros (7-3-6) in the Western State Conference 2015 regular soccer season finale at Santa Barbara City College early Friday afternoon.
Hoping for an outside shot at the regional playoffs, the Vaqueros were in no mood for compromise and rode herd on the hapless Raiders throughout the game.
Any hopes the injury-plagued Raiders had of a repeat performance, when it tied Santa Barbara 2-2 at the Raiders Pitch in October, were quickly dashed when Englishman Haydn Dickinson scored the first of his two goals for the home team in the third minute.
On a roster filled with international student athletes, six from Great Britain, five from Sweden, a Parisian and a Venezuelan, Santa Barbara got full payback against the upstart Raiders on its own turf.
According to reports, the Vaqueros upped the ante when Nicolas Genthon scored the second goal in the 36th minute to make it 2-0 by halftime. Genthon added two more in the second half for his hat trick.
Shortly after the break, Dickinson scored again on a header from a corner kick and had Moorpark on the ropes down 3-0. Kebba Nyang added a fourth goal when he dribbled around goalkeeper Daniel Moreno for a score in the 49th minute.
Moorpark’s leaky defenses finally burst when Genthon hit the target again from pointblank range in the 66th minute. Substitute Felix Llambias added the sixth with less than 15 minutes left, and Genthon scored his hat trick near the end to complete the rout.
After Moorpark earned its first win of the season against Allan Hancock College in early October and almost defeated Glendale less than a week later, hopes were high that a seasonal turnaround was in the cards. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out that way and the team finished where it started in September, camped in the basement of the WSC.
As the Raiders ride off into the sunset, turning the page on a disappointing 2015 season, the record indicates marginal improvement over the previous year. Off-season recruiting efforts will have to yield a broader talent pool if it wants to excel in the highly competitive community college men’s soccer environment.
“It doesn’t matter how good the coach is, if you don’t have [talented] players you’re going to lose,” Athletic Director Howard Davis said. “The key to it all is recruiting, and the coach is focused on upgrading his recruiting efforts this year.”
