No additional enrollment fees for late-start classes will be offered to currently enrolled students at Moorpark College starting Jan. 25.

Students interested in the mini-scholarship campaign, called “One Thousand Scholars” will have to see a counselor and identify which classes still have openings, said Moorpark College President Luis Sanchez in an email.

The campaign will give the first 1,000 students a free late-start class, but will still have to pay the non-enrollment fees. This opportunity is not offered for out-of-state students because the funding is based on the $46 cost per unit, said Sanchez, and those students pay the increased fees.

“The obvious purpose of this campaign is to boost our spring enrollments, provide our students with a rare opportunity for a free class and shore classes that are under enrolled,” said Sanchez.

Sanchez says enrollments at the college are relatively flat because of the nationwide and local economic trends, but now there is a chance to capitalize on growth funding. Not doing so would hurt the ability to help students in the current budget and future year.

Sanchez also asks faculty to encourage students into taking a late-start class.

“For this initiative to work, we need everyone’s help,” said Sanchez. “The way to help is to encourage every student you greet, in your classrooms, in your offices or anywhere on campus, to take advantage of the opportunity to add a later-start class for free.”
