The Associated Students approved funds to purchase 500 reusable water bottles and 1,000 new t-shirts in Tuesday’s meeting.

Last semester, A.S. Vice President Carmel Guthrez and A.S. Director of External Affairs Patrick Nordstrom were responsible for the proposal of installing additional hydration stations across campus. Guthrez said that the reusable water bottles and the hydration stations, that will be done by the summer or the fall, would go hand in hand in addressing the sustainability issues on campus.

“Part of the proposal that we made in order to get the hydration stations was for students to have reusable water bottles,” Gutherz said. “When students use reusable water bottles they are saving money by not buying water bottles constantly. This will also save the campus money in plastic waste.”

Using money from the general fund account, the board has spent $4,350 on 500 reusable water bottles and $3,250 on 1,000 t-shirts.

Chelsea Vanicek, A.S. public relations director, said the t-shirts that are usually given at the New Student Welcome and other events were not inclusive enough.

“When a student receives a shirt that says Moorpark Associated Students, they might feel as if it only applies to A.S., but we decided to change that so it doesn’t seem as if it only applies to A.S.,” said Vanicek.

These t-shirts will not be available in the Student Bookstore, but only to be given out at events sponsored by A.S.

“These shirts will be made with a logo that specifies it was from Associated Students, and it will be in black and blue,” said Vanicek.

These shirts and water bottles will be available for free to students with a Student ID card at events such as athletic games, in the future.
