Dinner and awards at the Moorpark Country Club is how the college will honor its scholar athletes, showcasing students who have excelled both academically and athletically.
The Moorpark College Athletic Department and the Captain’s Council is holding the annual Scholar Athlete Recognition Ceremony on Thursday, June 30 at 6 p.m. at the club. They will recognize every student athlete that completed 13 units at a 3.0 GPA or higher while playing, according to the invitation.
“It’s just appreciation for how well they’re doing athletically, it’s an incentive to do well at school,” said Vance Manakas, interim athletic director.
A number of awards will be given out at the ceremony, including the Male and Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, Male and Female Athlete of the Year, the John Keever and Diane Costabile Character Champion awards.
Each coach nominates an athlete for an award, and later all the coaches vote to decide the winner, Manakas said. He expects attendance to be around 300.
“We want to support our athletes, say ‘great job and we’re proud of the achievements you have,'” Manakas said. “We want to showcase our athletic department and no better place than the Moorpark Country Club.”
Dinner will be provided. Student athletes being recognized received an invitation, and there is a $40 fee for parents and additional guests.
