The Theater Arts department will premiere “A Streetcar Named Desire” at the Performing Arts Center on Oct. 12.
The play is based in the 1945-1950s era, and was originally written by famous American playwright Tennessee Williams. It is being performed and operated by Moorpark College students and faculty who have been hard at work on the play since early August. The play deals with raw emotion, relationship conflicts and controversial topics that are meant to connect with audiences.
“I hope people resonate with the themes and sympathies on the characters in the production and hopefully relate,” said Mikki Benjamin, Theatre Arts major, 20, who plays Eunice Hubbell.
The performance stars a Elisabeth Melcher and Alex Rae as Blanche DuBois, a character who’s life has been derailed by her romantic illusions. Her sister, Stella Kowalski, played by Rachel Gula and Hannah Harvey and her brother in-law, Stanley Kowalski, played by Ryan Bates and Geogory Swedian, who live in New Orleans and are forced to take care of Blanche.
During long hours of rehearsals, performers have played on intense themes which will offer an emotional roller coasters for audiences.
“This is a dark, heavy and emotional production, I got the chance to work with fellow actors and great calibers,” said Kristofero Morales, Theater Arts major, 24, who plays Steve Hubbell in the show.
This show runs Oct. 12-14 and 19-21 at 8:00pm and Oct. 15 and 22 at 2:00pm.
Tickets are on sale now. They can be bought online on the Moorpark College website or at the box office at the PAC. Box office prices are $12 and online purchases are at a discounted price of $8.
