The Writing Center can improve more than your grammar, it can improve your love life.
The center provided Valentines cards and decorations for students to write a special message to whoever their heart desired on Feb. 8. Some students wrote to their partners, while others wrote to their friends and even pets. Several people wrote poems as well, a student who preferred to remain anonymous wrote to Summer.
“Summer, Since you last left me, my heart has felt a great loss. The weather was darker than ever. Cold walks along the beach and rain puddles everywhere. I look forward to your return and our days at Zuma Beach, Love Helen.”
This event contrasted current dating scenes. Many students online date, but events like these on campus give participants the chance to swipe right in person. Additionally, it gave a chance for any student to write a letter of appreciation to friends and family. Chloe Porche, a tutor at the center, said she was writing a letter to surprise her sister.
Happenings like these are common in the writing center. It regularly hosts workshops on test taking, note-taking and fundamental writing strategy. There are also poetry workshops, and letter writings to military service members.
“This is my second year at the letter writing events,” said Jasmine Betka, a tutor at the writing center. “I think they are really great events because they bring people together and have a really good time, it’s kind of fun to write letter.”
All Moorpark students can attend workshops or schedule a one on one tutoring session. Students can go to the student services section of the Moorpark College website and make an appointment online.
