Students of Moorpark College! The midterm elections are around the corner and all of our voices matter. We must ask ourselves, are we registered to vote? And if not, how can that change?
With the Nov. 6 midterm elections rapidly approaching, Republicans and Democrats are going head-to-head to battle over the control of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
11 propositions are also to be decided on. Important issues comprised of bonds for housing, changes in daylight savings, children’s hospital funding, and the elimination of public road repairs and transpiration funds.
As others states’ deadlines for voter registrations have passed, California’s deadline is near. It’s a very simple process to register and can take no longer than 10 minutes, if you follow the process correctly.
So below are a few simple answers to your questions.
When is the deadline to register to vote?
All voters must register to vote by Oct. 22, 2018, in order to be on the register of their local polling place or to receive their Vote By Mail ballots.
How do I register to vote and what do I need?
Before or on Oct. 22 you may register online or mail in a registration form. You will need your California driver license or California identification card number, the last four digits of your social security number and your date of birth.
If I missed the October 22 deadline can I still vote?
Of course you can! You can still register to vote if you go to your local Elections Division Office. This process is known as Conditional Voter Registration (CVR).
Here is how it works:
- If you are not a registered voter you must go to your county elections office, complete a voter registration form, and vote a CVR provisional ballot.
- If you are registered in another county you may go to the county election office where you now live, complete a voter registration form, and vote a CVR provisional ballot.
- If you have moved within the county where you are registered to vote you may go to the closest polling place for your new address or you may go to the county election office and complete a voter registration form and vote a provisional ballot.
Disabled, Overseas, and Military
California disabled, overseas, and military residents can also go to the same website, fill out the application online and request an absentee ballot. It will ask you about your current situation as to why you cannot vote in person. After you register as an absentee you will be able to have your ballot faxed, emailed or mailed to your current location.
Don’t know if you are registered to vote?
To check if you are registered to vote, go to https://voterstatus.sos.ca.gov. From there, you may also see where you are registered to vote, your polling place, and information about upcoming elections.
Remember, everyone’s vote counts! Your voice matters! So let’s all go and make a difference and vote on Nov. 6!
