Get ready for an action-packed show bursting with musical numbers and absurdist humor, because the Moorpark College Theater Arts department is showcasing their rendition of the Tony award-winning musical, Monty Python’s Spamalot, for the Spring 2019 semester.

This musical, written by Eric Idle, is inspired by the 1975 movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Like the movie, the play parodies the legend of King Arthur. However, this musical spoof adds a twist by using music, dance, and modern-day humor to liven up the movie and bring it to a 21st-century audience.

Despite the satirical and light-hearted nature of the musical, a lot of hard work is being put into this production. Beth Megill, the production’s choreographer, mentions the extensive effort involved in the making of this musical.

“It combines theater, dance, and production, and a lot of hands are on deck for this large-scale collaboration,” says Megill.

This performance has over 20 musical numbers which will include energetic bursts of song and dance, all the while adding in unexpected moments of humor that is sure to keep the audience on their toes.

Megill speaks on what the audience can expect, stating the purpose is to single out each and every type of person in an effort to get people to laugh at themselves.

“This musical is making fun of everyone and everything; no one is safe,” Megill said. “The audience should leave having laughed. It’s absurd and points to our human follies in a very fun way.”

The Moorpark College Performing Arts Center will be running Spamalot every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from March 7 to 23 at 8 p.m. Matinee performances are March 10, 17, and 24 at 2 p.m.
