‘Voices Matter’: Students give us their take on their own culture and what Multicultural Day means to them
Multicultural Day, an annual festival designed to showcase diverse stories and experiences from a wide range of cultures, took over the Moorpark College campus Tuesday.Many instructors also use this as an opportunity for an "alternate day of instruction" to highlight lessons that are best learned from those with different experiences.
‘Voices Matter’: Transgender presentation garners a strong reaction from members of the Moorpark community
Many misconceptions exist about the transgender community, and Jude Goodman, a Moorpark College art student and member of the transgender community, works to reverse these misconceptions through their Multicultural Day presentation, “Transgender 101”.Though the presentation concerned itself mostly with general information about the transgender community, it served as a crash-course intended to teach ill-informed or uneducated people about sensitive issues.

‘Voices Matter’: Powerful life stories of caretakers bring students to tears during Multicultural Day
Caretakers are responsible for helping millions of families care for their sick, disabled, and elderly loved ones, helping them with day-to-day tasks. Two passionate caretakers shared their experience with the students at Moorpark College, bringing some to tears.This year’s Multicultural Day, with the theme of "Voices Matter,” brought both Gale Taylor and Kathleen McCall to share their stories. Taylor and McCall spoke about their lives as former caretakers and the effect it has had on them.
‘Voices Matter’: self-portraits from local artist and MC students
For Multicultural Day, the Art Department held an exhibition in the Administration building that featured a collaboration between artist Kristine Schomaker and Professor Erika Lizée’s Gallery Practices class.Through a series of self-portraits, Schomaker’s autobiographical artwork entitled "Plus," focused on the body image, gender identity, and the pressures society forces on women's physical beauty over character and intelligence.

Speakers discussed many different topics surrounding race and ethnicity as part of this year's "Voices Matter" Multicultural Day at Moorpark College.Professor Ranford Hopkins led the dialogue at the "Race Matters" event. The main idea behind this event was meant for students to participate in a healthy discussion about racial matters.
