This year’s NBA trade deadline occurs on Mar. 25 at 3 p.m. ET.

The past two NBA champions won the Larry O’Brien trophy because of one massive trade by each team. The 2019 Raptors won the title by trading for Kawhi Leonard and the 2020 Lakers did the same in their acquisition of Anthony Davis.

Acquiring a targeted player, creating salary cap space and collecting draft picks are the main reasons that teams do trades. This shifts the direction that franchisees want to go in.

They can decide to rebuild or go all-in on trying to win a title. At the trade deadline, the contenders will either stay put or try to improve their current roster by trading for players that they believe will move the needle.

The completion of a decisive trade by a franchise can be the difference-maker in bringing home the championship trophy. Below are realistic trade scenarios for the current contenders of the league.

Philadelphia 76ers: Kyle Lowry

The Sixers are in need of a floor general that can glue their team together. Lowry gives Philly just that with his veteran leadership and championship experience. His seven assists per game provide a substantial improvement in the passing game. This trade transports the former Villanova alumni back to his hometown area. The starting point guard would bring the 76ers to another level in their pursuit of the championship.

Brooklyn Nets: Jonas Valanciunas

The Nets don’t need to add any major pieces to their super team to win it all. Brooklyn could use another legitimate center outside of DeAndre Jordan to make their roster that much more unstoppable. Valanciunas is a top-five rebounder in the NBA with 12 per game. In acquiring the reliable 6’11” center at the trade deadline, the Nets would have a Twin Towers type combination of centers to hold down the paint.

Milwaukee Bucks: Louis Williams

Williams gives Milwaukee a major upgrade in their bench scoring. The three-time Sixth Man Award winner is producing 12 points this season. They have been aggressive through the trade market in recent memory with the completed deals of Jrue Holiday and P.J. Tucker. Adding Williams off the bench helps gear up the Bucks for a deep playoff run.

Miami Heat: John Collins

Despite their recent NBA finals appearance, the Heat were off to a rough start this season. They have now come back to life and are currently in the playoff picture. Adding Collins alongside Bam Adebayo gives Miami an uber-athletic frontcourt. The 23 year-old forward is putting up 18 points and seven rebounds this season. This would be a stellar move by the Heat to build their core even more for the present and future.

Utah Jazz: Aaron Gordon

The blazing Jazz are currently the top record in the league but need to look to add more. A trade for Gordon presents them with more offensive versatility. The inside-out scorer has improved his three-point percentage to greater than 40% this season. Utah can’t get complacent with their current team if they want to see the results they want in the playoffs. Adding Gordon to the mix gives the Jazz another weapon that improves their chances of winning the title.

Phoenix Suns: Jerami Grant

The Suns are going to make the playoffs for the first time since 2010. Adding Chris Paul via trade made that reality possible. One more big acquisition could put them over the top. Enter Grant into the equation and Phoenix will establish themselves as a serious threat in the playoffs. He has skyrocketed his production this year to 23 points and five rebounds.

Los Angeles Lakers: Myles Turner

The Lakers are in need of a two-way center to strengthen their team identity. Turner is leading the league in blocks with more than three per game. He can stretch the floor on offense which allows Anthony Davis to feast in the paint. The 24 year-old adds a necessary boost to both ends of the floor for the defending champions.

Los Angeles Clippers: Terry Rozier

Rozier is having a career year averaging 20 points on 42% shooting from behind the arc. The Clippers are missing a point guard that can break down the defense. The speedy Rozier is a great option because he gives Los Angeles a clear third scorer. He is a solid defender that can create plays for his teammates. This is the type of deal that can get the Clippers to their first NBA Finals appearance in franchise history.
