Shuttleworth is a Los Angeles-based artist who investigates how plastics have been shaped into both the familiar and functional. She will be hosting a lecture on Sept. 11 at 3 p.m. in the Physical Science Building, Room 202. The lecture is free-of-charge and open to the public.

Shuttleworth uses polyvinyl from safety cones, and other post-consumer products to create landscape images and 2D and 3D sculptures.

“There is a recycling effort involved: it’s not the main focus, but I’d like to think through art you can use materials that make you more aware,” said Shuttleworth.

Shuttleworth’s art work is inspired by the relationship between the medium, us, and our world.

“What inspires me is creating a long lasting effect. People just don’t see it in a gallery and only see how beautiful it is,” said Shuttleworth. “Instead they can think about it further down the road.”

Gallery Director and Moorpark College Art Professor. Erika Lizee said there are two more art exhibitions scheduled for the fall.

“We see our gallery as a teaching space, and that’s why we have the lecture component so the students get to hear from the artist about their progression, or their educational path,” said Lizee.

During the lecture students will be able to learn about the artist’s processes, her history and how she gets the material.

“We are excited about the exhibition,” said Lizee. “I love to see the artist come in and give students the chance to hear the artist speak because we don’t know how often they get the chance to do that. ”
