Students, who aspire to work in an industry with radio, television or the media, now have a chance to intern at their dream job with the help of Moorpark Colleges’ Career and Transfer Center internship program.
The radio station KIIS FM 102.7 is currently serving as a host for young intern, Mario Vazquez. This opportunity was given to him through Moorpark College and now he is on his way to accomplishing his dream to become a host on radio or television, like his inspiration, Ryan Seacrest.
Vazquez, 20, broadcast journalism major, said the best part about working with KIIS FM was meeting everybody.
“There are just so many connections,”said Vazquez. “This is amazing.”
Vazquez said the best way to get the most out of an internship at any radio station is to learn everything there is to know about the business. He thinks it’s important to “say yes to anything and everything. Learn as much as possible.”
There are many perks to interning at a dream job of any students, but there are dues to be paid as well. Going into this internship, Vasquez had nothing but good expectations and high hopes for what he was about to endure. Little did he realize, interning isn’t all about the fun. He was asked to do typical intern tasks, such as, coffee runs, printing papers, and even had to defrost the freezer using a blow dryer. He didn’t expect all of the long hours that would be involved. Some people were short with him when deadlines approached which surprised him. He said this job is really teaching him how to manage his time better and also not to take things to personal. Even though it’s been hard for him, it has all been worth it.
Marketing Coordinator, Angel Nagar who works with Vazquez, said that in this industry of work there is always something going on. With approximately four million listeners, KIIS FM is constantly trying to be one step ahead of the leading stations. They need to make sure the most accurate information before others to keep listeners tuned in. Nagar’s job is to manage the brand and make sure she gets the most accurate info. Vazquez hopes to get involved with her job some day.
“As a national radio station, we need to make sure we protect our brand,” said Nagar. “We need to make sure everyone knows whatever we are doing is apart of KIIS FM radio.”
“Interning has been such a blessing,” said Vazquez. He plans to continue in this field after college to some day host, or be on the radio. He said it even be a dream of his to be involved in radio and TV production as well.
