With many students at Moorpark College already preparing to make the transition into next semester, that means scholarships and lots of applications are right around the corner.
With scholarship money coming from generous Moorpark College staff, private citizens, and community donors, there is no shortage of opportunities for students. Neither is there a lack of range considering the many scholarships covering all majors. What a better time to earn some money for the 2014-2015 school year. It is especially pressing that students get on top of application sooner than later when some deadlines are as early as March 7.
Amongst the myraid of scholarship donated, Moorpark College’s own ASB offer their own scholarships as well.
“The Associated Students Scholarships has been a continuing program that the A.S. Board creates each semester to give students the chance to pay for college in this tough economic climate,” said Academic Affairs Director Jesse Alcala.
With all scholarships considered to be prominent, there is something for every major and student. From nursing and biology majors, to EATM and continuing students at Moorpark, ASB’s expectations for the application process is high.
“Every year [when] we put up the scholarships, we get a high turn out and it becomes very competitive,” said Alcala.
Included in the packet of scholarships, the A.S. Board’s five scholarships involve two new additions: the Veteran’s Scholarship and the Single-Parent Scholarship. The former was created to help and appreciate those who have served our country and for those who are looking to receive their higher education, These may not be around next year, since every year the Associated Students change the criteria for scholarships in order to give everyone a chance.
However, beyond the A.S. scholarships there are several more that are not always properly recognized, such as the Retired Teachers Association Scholarship.
“The retired teachers wanted to do something for students who intended to become teachers,” said Vice President of the Ventura County Retired Teachers Association Scholarship Foundation (VCRTASF) Beverly Pearson.
Founded in 1992, VCRTASF was a scholarship created by teachers, for teachers. As one of the founding faculty members of Moorpark College, Pearson joined this scholarship as a donor to honor past educators and to encourage future educators. With Moorpark College history running through this scholarship, Pearson and the rest of the board of directors are looking to give out several scholarships this spring.
No matter what your major is, you can apply to receive the money you need to help you get the education you deserve.
“It isn’t a hard process, you just have to put some of your time in,” said Scholarship Office’s Assistant Maria Perez-Medeiros.
If you need help putting your essays together or just a thorough editing on your personal statement then the Writing Center can help. Having even held essay workshops in the past.
When asked for any advice Medeiros said, “use your money while you are here.”
She explained that so many students think they are saving up their scholarship money for when they transfer, but not all scholarships are transferable. With 600 scholarship applications last year Medeiros is looking to exceed that number.
The list of scholarships is on the Moopark College website are available in the Scholarship office with all the requirements necessary in the Administration Building 126.
