Match.com allows you to find a soulmate based on components of compatibility. Be the Match is a bone marrow donor organization where people have the opportunity to find the ultimate match: an opportunity to save a life.
The importance of getting people registered to donate bone marrow was reiterated in the lecture “Be the Match: The Need for Donors-Vital Statistics.” In collaboration with Multicultural Day, the organization was bringing awareness to the life-threatening diseases such as leukemia and lymphoma that affect thousands of people every year.
The event was led by Be the Match account executive Donna Collins, who believed that people should be enticed to register just by the fact of what they can accomplish: giving people a second chance at life.
“You have the power to save a life,” she said. “Whether or not you save a life, you have the opportunity to save a life.”
According to Collins, however, the numbers show that only three out of every 10 leukemia patients get a bone marrow transplant match.
As a result, the need for donors is always in demand and are needed for people of all different ethnic backgrounds.
The current Be the Match database has 8 million registered donors, but according to Collins, more are needed because of the low probability of finding a match.
Collins believes that people should take advantage of the opportunity given to people to make a difference.
“It’s very simple to save a life,” she said. “These patients are dependent on finding a match.”
If you are interested in registering as a bone marrow donor, you can register at the Be the Match registration booth in the Moorpark College quad, or visit the organization’s website at www.bethematch.org.
