With the economy charting unknown waters, people have been holding tightly to their jobs or grabbing what they can in order to survive.
Moorpark College held a Job and Career expo Tuesday in the Campus Center for students to meet prospective employers.
Tents filled the lawn, each with a different job opportunity for students. From jobs with the County to Macy’s. Students were able to get an idea of what they might like to do, as well as what jobs are being offered.
“We are putting this on because we want to offer opportunities for the students,” said Judi Gould of the Career/Transfer Center.
The expo provided students with the ability to look at jobs that they could start working at now as well as jobs that they could have in the future as their career.
“Obviously the students are looking for jobs”, says Gould, “but we want to provide them with their real future jobs.”
The career expo was not just for students, but also open to the local community looking for a job opportunity.
Students were advised to dress their best to impress potential employers. Many students were wearing suits, despite the 90 degree weather.
The employers and representatives were offering various choices for the students, such as part-time jobs, summer jobs, internships and volunteer positions.
“I think it’s very positive, the students have been very receptive, we like the fact that Moorpark College provided us with the tents.” said Christine Miller, an Avon representative at the expo.
Although there were many different job choices offered, some students were not able to find the right job.
“I thought it was a good idea, I thought that there would be more that I would be interested in”, said John Lay, a MC student, “however I think it’s good that they made an effort”.
The expo gave students multiple opportunities to advance their future career and to give them jobs that they could start working at now. They were also able to find volunteer positions and start networking.
“It’s more than just a career expo, it’s an opportunity to network,” says Gould, “it’s a chance to really investigate if what job you are looking at is a good field for you.”
