Learning to understand and accept others’ differences is not always an easy thing to do; however this year’s theme, Year of Conflict Transformation at Moorpark College, seeks to reduce this problem.
Professor Jack Miller and Dr. Janice Daurio, co-chairs of the Year of Conflict Transformation, lead this series of events including speakers and conversations, centered around a theme chosen in the spring of the previous year.
Professor Miller, a Political Science Professor at MC, explained that they chose the theme based on the 10-year anniversary of Sept 11.
“Why did we see that moment, and what can be changed?,” Miller asked during a visit to a journalism class. “Can we find ways in which to deal with our conflict?”
This is the sixth year of the “Year of” series. In cooperation with the series, MC has chosen the “One Campus One Book” to be The Help by Katheryn Stockett. It focuses on conflicts between two races and classes. Last year, the “Year of” series was “Year of the Economy” where they had events addressing economic issues.
Conflict Transformation is the process by which conflicts are transformed into peaceful outcomes. Miller explained that there are three basic components to conflict transformation, the first being voices, have all the voices been heard? The second component is language, what is the best language to use in a conflict, and what helps us reach a solution? The third component is process, meaning are there better ways to reach each other.
The Year of series kicks off with Dr. Steve Pfeffer who is scheduled to speak on Sept. 12, the day after the 10-year anniversary of 9/11. Pfeffer’s topic will be Great Power Politics and the rise of Al-Qaeda. On Sept. 13 at 11:30 am a student panel will feature three Muslim students discussing what it’s like “being Muslim” on a college campus. On Sept. 14, Imam Ahmed Patel lectures on “What everyone should know about Islam” on the main stage of the Performing Arts Center. The Year of series events ends with the 22nd annual Multicultural day that will be held on Tuesday April 12th2012 at Moorpark College
This year, Professor Miller would like the students to walk away with a more analytical look on their actions, rather than walking away without repercussions.
“We hope to create awareness and for students to think in a more critical way,” said Miller.
