Layering clothes can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be. The key to layering is to pick the right fabrics and work your way out from thinnest to thickest. By following these easy steps, layering your wardrobe will look effortless.
Start with the basics; choosing basics is the easiest way to start off the look. Basics are generally solid, muted colors with no prints or bold cuts. For men and women these include v-necks, Henley and rugby shirts, long sleeves and thermals. Women’s basics include camis and slouchy tops.
The second layer should include lightweight sweaters, flannel vests and sweater vests. This is a great time to incorporate lightweight sweaters leftover from summer. For both genders, sweaters can include a regular, crew neck sweater and cardigans. With flannels, try to avoid any summer-colored hues and stick to rich, fall colors.
Vests are more a matter of preference; they can often take you look more sophisticated side. For guys it can be a bit easier, because you can finish this step by just layering a basic tee with a sweater or sweater vest, by preference, and cardigan with pants. Girls can go with either pants or a dress. When layering a dress, it’s best to keep it simple with a cardigan, and a belt to keep your shape.
With each layer, the thickness of each fabric should increase. The next step includes heavy coats like trench coats, pea coats, chunky, knit sweaters and parkas. All of these heavy duty pieces will factor into your wardrobe, depending on how far the temperature drops.
For women wearing pants, any heavy duty piece would look good. With a dress, however, I would recommend a fit and flare coat; one that is fitted at the top and flares out towards the bottom. With guys, any heavy duty coat applies well to your outfit. If you choose to wear your coat opened, accent your neck with a scarf or muffler.
Accessories such as scarves, gloves, hats and beanies are optional. If you find yourself adding two or more accessories, I would lose a layer. This will prevent your outfit from looking too heavy. With a keen eye for what looks good, along with these easy steps, layering up this fall will be fun and simple.
