Moorpark College has gone through a football season without cheerleaders and the world didn’t come to an end.
I’m not against the prospect of cheerleaders, I think they are great for school spirit and they can provide a helpful boost at a football game under the right circumstances.
Sitting on the sideline at Larrabee Stadium at Ventura College, I had the perfect opportunity to compare the football atmosphere between Moorpark and Ventura.
After getting a chance to see the way fans reacted to the football game and the way they flocked the bleachers, I noticed the key difference.
At Ventura, the attendance is higher, therefore, making the need for cheerleaders greater.
I don’t think that Moorpark has reached the point where it has a need for cheerleaders, and my biggest reasoning is because it seems like it would be a waste of time for them.
Through the regular season, the Raiders Griffin Stadium average 685 fans a game according to the Moorpark College athletics office.
That may seem like a lot when you first see the number, but you have to remember that that number includes both team’s fans, and you also have to consider the seating capacity.
Griffin Stadium can seat up to 4,500 fans.
Now that means that 15 percent of the stadium seating is being used.
Let’s pretend for a second that you’re a cheerleader, and you spend all that time training and working to put yourself on the line to perform for the public.
You spend all week working, and then Saturday night lights hit you and you look up getting ready to perform, and what do you see? I think you get the picture.
