“The voice” told Terence Mann in the film “Field of Dreams,” if you build it they will come.
Moorpark College philosophy Professor Jerry Caplan told students if you throw it, it will come back.
Of course “The Voice” is speaking about the magic behind a baseball field, whereas Caplan was speaking of the magic behind a boomerang.
“The boomerang works because it has magic behind it,” Caplan said. “That’s what makes it work, magic.”
Caplan spoke to a group of about 20 students on how boomerangs came to be in this country and around the world. He is one of 12 members of the United States national team that ventured to Australia and was amongst the forefront of international competition of boomeranging.
In 1980, the United States Boomerang Association began with heavy influence from Caplan.
The boomeranging competition has grown into the world cup of boomerang, which has grown into a multi-country event.
By the end of the event, students had more insight about the history of the boomerang and how in fact the boomerang was found in King Tut’s grave, and is not just the Australian toy people think it is.
