Thanks to its popularity last semester, Moorpark College’s oddly-named, improvisational comedy show, Improv-a-sutra, will return for another staging this March.
“Last semester we sold out almost every night and we anticipate more of the same this semester,” said director, John Loprieno. “We’re growing a very dedicated following! I think Moorpark students really get a kick out of seeing their peers up there making people laugh.”
All the performers are enrolled in the THA M10 Theatre Production class.
“Improv-a-sutra” features about 10-15 different sketches, skits, and games, some with musical accompaniment.
There are sixteen student performers in the group; however, on any given night only eight to ten will perform.
“I’ve got more people auditioning each semester than I can take into this group. I see that as a good sign,” said Loprieno.
The group also does a corroborative project with the Radio and TV department called “Live at Club M.” This semester, the show will be held on May 8, at 7:30 p.m.
“Improv-a-sutra” is even spreading outside Moorpark College.
“They [the students] are even at the point of booking gigs outside of school and in the community and Los Angeles,” said Loprieno. “The word of mouth is growing and so is the interest on all levels! These are all good signs.”
The shows this semester are set for March 1, 15, and 29 for $8.00 per ticket in the Studio Theatre (PA-100).
As for the name, Loprieno explained, “The name ‘Improv-a-sutra’ was decided upon by the core members of the group last semester. They tossed around several names and this is the one they liked the best. I like to let the group have as much autonomy as possible.”
