With the baseball season just underway, the Oxnard College Condors are looking to improve on their rocky start.
Through only eight games the Condors are just a mediocre 3-5. Although they did not get off to the start they were looking for, their high expectations have not changed. Going into Western State Conference play, Oxnard looks to improve on their record.
“I think we will do well in conference play,” said Kevin Dann, a second-year pitcher for Oxnard. “We had a good weekend in Bakersfield. Even though we lost I think we played well.”
The Condors did lose three games in a tournament in Bakersfield, but two of thier losses came in extra innings. On Feb. 12, Oxnard lost a tough game to L.A. Mission, 10-9. As a result, their record of 3-5 could be considered deceiving.
Two of the Condors wins belong to freshman pitcher Cory Goldsmith. Goldsmith is a perfect 2-0 in his first two starts.
“We are playing better baseball then our record suggests,” said Goldsmith. “We could easily be 6-2 right now.”
The Condors are also dealing with several injuries to key players.
“We are playing good but we are injury plagued,” said Goldsmith. “We just need to get healthy.”
Once overcoming injuries and with a little more fine tuning the Condors look to be a force in the Western State Conference.
“I think we can win in conference play,” said Goldsmith. “It is hard to tell since we haven’t played any of the teams in our conference.”
Even with no Fall ball experience for all three of Ventura County Community Colleges, the Condors are looking forward to the rest of the season, and feel with the apparent respect the coaching staff they have a good chance to make their upcoming a successful one.
“(The Condors) have great respect for our coaches,” said Dann. “Many of them have played the professional level. We just need to win the conference and do well in the state tournament.”
