Former award-winning Moorpark Review writers were welcomed back to read their poetry in the open space of the Learning Center on April 23.
The Moorpark Review Masters Reading session featured six alumni writers who have been published in the Moorpark Review Creative Arts Magazine in the past.
The reading was set out to encourage and cultivate creative writing programs on campus. The readers are former students who were asked to come back to read their poetry to current students. These former students have gone on to continue their creative writing studies at various universities.
English Professor, Hart Schulz said that it’s a nice forum for these former students, but mostly it’s to motivate and inspire students that are currently here.
“Professor Tracy Tennenhouse and I started the magazine 14 years ago and since then we’ve won a couple of awards and provided hundreds of students with practical experience with editing a college literary arts magazine,” said Schulz. “In addition, we’re providing a forum for artists in our campus community. My personal passion for creative writing goes back to college, where my primary degree was in Creative Writing.”
Sami Begloo, 24, English major said that it’s hard to find people who care about poetry.
“The biggest thing that this is, is an opportunity for people who appreciate and care about poetry to come together,” said Begloo.
Students that are interested in attending a future event like this one can attend the annual Moorpark Review publication event, which will be held on May 17 from 4p.m. to 6p.m. It will relate to this year’s edition of the Moorpark Review, and it will feature writers and artists who are being published. The event will also have music and food to go along with various readings.
The review accepts submissions year round for art, photo, poetry, and short fiction.
Students desiring publication of their works for the Moorpark Review online
version can submit to www.moorparkcollege.edu/review and follow
the submissions guidelines.
