Student written plays will entertain audiences on two different evenings in the “Original One Acts” at Moorpark College.
Each evening has five different original 20-minute plays that explore subjects from relationships to social and ethnic divisions.
Producing the event is Theater Arts Professor Katherine Lewis who enjoys one act plays.
“A play gives you one person’s view while at the ‘One Acts,’ you can get five different viewpoints every evening,” said Lewis. “It’s interesting to hear the viewpoints of younger people. Hear the young voices.”
One of those young voices is Communications major Ray Hebel, 21, who wrote “Secret of the Chile” for the One Acts.
“Secret of the Chile” is a comedic spoof of the Old West with a cast of crazy characters; however, Hebel is tight lipped about what is happening.
“To find out what the secret is, you’re going to have to come and find out,” said Hebel.
While Hebel’s play is fun, it was a different learning experience trying his hand at directing.
“I’m trying to mesh things I’ve learned from different directors and it doesn’t always work out,” said Hebel.
“Secret of the Chile” is on Evening B of the “Original One Acts.”
Lewis enjoys seeing original student work because it comes from a pure place within the writer.
“In pop culture, we see stuff that is there to make money and get a mass audience,” said Lewis. “One Act writers have something to say and they express it through their work.”
The “Original One Acts” will be performed in the Moorpark College Performing Arts Center Studio Theater. Tickets cost $8 for one evening, $6 for a matinee, or $12 for two evenings if the tickets are bought at the same time.
Evening A is April 23, 25, 29 and May 1 at 7:30 p.m. with a 1:30 pm matinee on April 22. Evening B is April 22, 24, 30 and May 2 at 7:30 p.m. and April 29 at 1:30 p.m. For more information, contact Katherine Lewis at 805-378-1568.
