It is official. The Earth is warming and the culprits are us. A United Nations panel of premier experts recently issued a report that indicates there is a 90+ percent probability; we are the ones to blame. The report was issued for the last 50 years of climate calculations.
That same trustworthy international governmental body, opportunely named the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, gave a report in 2001 with our causal rate at 66 percent. And that convincing estimate was extraordinarily higher from a 30-year-old warning in an article for the dire consequences of the upcoming Ice Age in Time Magazine.
The article published June 24, 1974, reported, “The University of Wisconsin’s Reid A. Bryson and other climatologists suggest that dust and other particles released into the atmosphere as a result of farming and fuel burning may be blocking more and more sunlight from reaching and heating the surface of the earth.” Seems although our current knowledgeable scientists are saying their predecessors didn’t realize, during the 70’s, were in the middle of global warming period.
Not that I’d condemn our own scientists for overstating the issue but let’s take a look at the weather around the world this past year. China, one of the most irresponsible nations in protecting the environment, has had its coldest winter in 100 years. On January 11, 2008, Baghdad received its first taste of snowfall in all of their recorded history. Moreover, according to the U.S. National Climatic Data Center, North America has had the most snowfall in 50 years. Among the continental United States, Wisconsin has had the highest snowfall since record-keeping began.
The political lobby arm of the global warming hysterics and environmentalists convinced the United States to fund the Argo System. It consists of 3000 robots placed at various locations throughout the oceans of the world. Following 10 day cycles, the small submersibles dive down to 3000 feet and test for the temperature and level of salinity.
Since 2003, the project has been in full operation with a peculiar result. Josh Willis a researcher at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory who works with the project, says what really is important are the oceans due to their vast size and ability to retain most of the Earth’s heat. The project was intended to decimate the remaining group of dissenters in the debate, into finally conceding to their point.
Periods of Global Warming are agreed to by all scientists and laymen alike, but the anthropogenic type is nothing but a farce. The Earth has been around for billions of years and will continue on, with its cyclical pattern of heating and cooling as it pleases. The earth experienced a cold spell of historic proportions in the 18th and 19th century. It is known as the Little Ice Age and it did in fact cause the catastrophic consequences that today’s environmental purport to be in motion. The problems were from the minor such as lost crops to the vitally important such as lives.
Everything should be done to reduce our waste and conserve energy. We shouldn’t coerce people into submitting but encourage them by example and by results of the proved benefits in exercising good habits. Promoting an unproven political talking point is not only disrupting our environmental efforts but placing an enormous hardship on our businesses. Businesses can be held liable if their smokestacks or other chemicals are polluting the air under common law. Once the theatrics are over, hopefully the Left doesn’t come up with another one of their trendy slogans but if they need one, I offer them one: “Gore lied, let it slide.”
