Best known for his musical-turn-Tim Burton film, “Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” Stephen Sondheim brings the Moorpark College Theater Department their next production, “Putting it Together: a musical review.”
Although there is no “plot” per say, the audience acts as an observer to a party in a Manhattan penthouse, watching the different stories of all the characters.
The 34-number musical is a compilation of six to seven of Sondheim’s works with, also known as a “revue.” However, “Sodheim has taken pains to spell ‘revue’ r-e-v-i-e-w as in ‘mull it over,’ because he expects you to think,” says the director’s notes of the script.
Cast member Hannah Davey said, “[Sondheim] wants you to interpret the message of the song and see the relationship between characters.” The 16 cast members debut their show on March 27, in a continuing engagement through March 29 at 8 p.m, and two matinees on March 29 and 30 at 2 p.m.
