In a continuing effort to connect students with their community, Moorpark College’s Year of Service presented a service fair, which hosted local and global non-profit organizations to recruit volunteers in the Campus Center on Feb. 25.
Adreanna Diaz, the Site Coordinator of the Campus Canyon Boys and Girls Club, expressed how volunteering knows no bounds for any type of person.
“I think that’s what’s great about our program,” said Diaz. “You just bring yourself. You don’t have to be a certain person to fit into the Boys and Girls Club. You don’t have to be a certain person to be a volunteer.”
The service fair brought 13 organizations to Moorpark College, contributing to the Year of Service theme, asking students to give back to the community and providing the outlets to do so. With organizations like Rotaract and the Boys and Girls Club looking for volunteers, any of these organizations can open the door to other opportunities.
The Boys and Girls club looks for volunteers who can bring any of their talents to share with the children who attend the club. Enrichment activities like sports, arts or music are greatly appreciated talents for volunteers to spread to the young community. Tutors for the club are also always needed to help out with homework or any kind of studying the children might need.
Another organization present at the service fair was the Rotary Club. Rotaract is a branch of the Rotary Club that strives to eradicate poverty and increase awareness for homelessness. To raise awareness of homelessness, the organization is setting up an event on May 1 in Simi Valley called ‘Box City,’ where members will recreate the hardships faced by the homeless and spend a night in a box.
Members of this branch are in the 18 to 30-year-old age group, providing a welcoming atmosphere for any college student and the opportunity to connect with new people. Crystal Sloan, a 19-year-old theater major and Rotaract member, was very grateful for the service fair and how it helps connect the students and the community.
“I really appreciate the time [spent],” said Sloan. “[Since] we don’t congregate like this to see who is in the community. It’s nice to see that.”
