A 63-2 over the past two seasons and 20 straight Western State Conference titles did not compile a resume that qualified the Pirates for a number one seed in this year’s Southern California Regional Playoffs.
For the second straight year, the Pirates locked the number two seed in the tournament bracket, which was released earlier today.
The Pirates will host either #15 Santa Monica City College or #18 Cuesta College, depending on the winner of the Regional play-in game Wednesday night at Santa Monica.
The winner will travel to the Ventura Athletic Center to take on the Pirates Saturday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m.
Mircetic believes his team should take one game at a time, and not worry about the rest of the playoffs and where they might stand.
“We’re just going to focus in on Saturday’s game and nothing else,” Mircetic said. “As soon as you do that…bad things happen to you.”
He has been snubbed the number one seed for two straight years, but this does not upset or bother the coach.
“There’s a procedure by which the seeding occurs,” he said. “It’s not right or wrong. It is what it is.”
On a more positive note, four Pirates players were selected to the All-Western State Conference team by coaches on Feb. 21. Forward Chanelle Brennan was named the WSC Most Valuable Player, while Amanda Padilla, Erika Ward, and Kris King joined Brennan as 1st-team All-WSC honorees.
Mircetic was very proud to see four of his players receive All-WSC honors.
“I am pleased for these individuals in earning this award [All-WSC],” he said in a press release. “It not only speaks highly of the honored individuals, but also speaks highly of what we have accomplished as a team.”
