Rocks shattered two car windows Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 28th, in the north overflow parking lot at Moorpark College.
Lt. Bob Escobedo of Moorpark College Campus Police was called to the scene, to see two cars had been damaged; a 1998 Toyota Camry, and a 2010 Honda Civic.
“At first, I thought it could be a hate crime,” said Escobedo. “But, then I saw little dents all over the car as well.”
The north overflow parking lot isn’t surfaced with asphalt like a typical parking lot. In fact, it isn’t paved at all, gravel and dirt are the only elements that subside in the overflow parking lots throughout campus.
After further brainstorming and investigating, Lt. Escobedo and fellow officers realized that there were doughnut markings near the damaged vehicles.
“It was obvious that students were doing doughnuts in the parking lot with their cars,” said Escobedo. “The tires must have kicked the rocks up into the cars, damaging not just the windows, but the side panels too.”
Lt. Escobedo said that they currently have no witnesses that saw the incident. The campus police classified the case as an act of vandalism due to the reckless behavior.
