A new board of Associated Students will take their oath on June 1.
Sayed Shah, was elected President winning the election with almost half of the votes, receiving 178 of 365. Shah decided to run for Associated Students President because he decided that if he was going to run he should “go- big”.
“My dad always told me go big, whatever you do go big, so I decided to run for president,” said Shah.
Voting took place on April 4 and 5 in the Campus Center at the Associated Students Office.
J. D. Zelman, Director of Constitution and Standing Rules, sat on the election committee and said that the ballot total for this year was low. He expressed the reason may have been because of reduced amount of time the district allotted for both campaigning and voting this semester.
“We were hoping for a turnout of about 500,” said Zelman.
Nevertheless, he believes the President elect and the incoming group of student officers will do a good job.” Shah’s a good guy,” Zelman said.
Shah campaigned efficiently by engaging with students as he handed out flyers. He offered a brief explanation of his goals if elected Associated Students President.
“I’m very good at communicating so when people were coming by I just told them my name is Sayed, I’m running for President,” he said. “I gave them a list of what I’d do, and told them if like what I’d do please vote for me. I didn’t take much of their time. I just handed it [the flyer] to them and they went and voted, and I won”
The rest of the newly elected board includes Vice President Chris Conway, Director of External Affairs Rippanjot Kahlon, Director of Budget & Finance Kimberly Eder, Director of Student Organizations Samantha Murphy, Director of Constitution & Rules Elija Coyle and Director of Public Relations Bradley Krebs.
Shah is confident that as long as the board can work together they can accomplish what they set out to do.
“Hopefully we will get a lot of things done,” said Shah.
