The Clippers are celebrating their 25th season in Los Angeles this year and all that fans have to celebrate is nothing more than mediocrity.
But to the real Clipper fans, we love our mediocrity, and won’t settle for the successful counterpart, the Lakers.
I have been a member of what they call Clipper Nation since the age of 10.
At that age, my father took me out to a Clipper game at the Staples Center.
At the time, the Clippers had a player by the name of Darius Miles, and he was just out of high school.
This man was a beast on the court and he really lit up my imagination and love for the Clippers.
Yes, I do realize that the Clippers are off to a 1-6 start this year, and I also realize that they got clobbered by the Lakers by 38 points the first time the two LA teams matched up.
It just doesn’t seem right. The Lakers obviously have and always will be the better of the two teams and I am not here to argue that fact, but being a Laker fan just doesn’t seem right to me at all.
Believe it or not, there are some benefits to being a Clipper fan.
First and foremost, we don’t suffer from the bandwagon fans. In the 2005-06 season when we finally reached the playoffs on the back of Sam Cassel, it was all ours to relish in.
No one wanted a part of them.
Secondly, there are no big disappointments, only great surprises.
Since moving to Los Angeles, the most wins the Clippers have racked up in a single season is 47, which is awful seeing as it is an 82 game season. So you learn to not expect anything from your guys.
Thirdly, and most importantly in my mind, as a college student, I am poor.
If you want to go see some good basketball, then go to a Clippers game.
Tickets are dirt cheap compared to a Lakers game and it isn’t how well the Clippers play, but how well the other team plays. So that is how I got sucked into the Clipper Nation.
I am here to stay and am not ashamed of the support I give to my Clippers.
