Professor, director, artist and photographer Niku Kashef is “freaked out” by cameras when not behind the lens and refers to a camera’s flash as “The Devil.”
Niku Kashef displayed her collection of photographs, titled “Monsters in the Closet”, in the Administration Building Gallery from Oct. 20 to Oct. 30. On Oct. 30, Kashef held a closing reception with a Q & A forum from 2 P.M. to 4 P.M. Niku Kashef’s “Monsters in the Closet” half hour reception received around thirty people, mostly photography students.
Displaying her dislike of being photographed, Kashef jokingly scolded Nick Mercuro, the Student Voice’s photographer covering the reception. “Control yourself!” Kashef teased. Each piece is inspired by childhood memories of friends and strangers collected from interviews. “Pomegranate Soup” depicts one interviewees memory of taking a bath with mini pomegranates floating around in the water.
Kashef received her B.A. and Masters in Fine Arts from California State University, Northridge. Two photography classes attended the reception and skittishly avoided Kashef’s attempts to involve the crowd but opened up after the talk. Hassel Villalta, 23, is a photography student at Moorpark College and first time attender to a Moorpark College art gallery liked what she saw of Kashef’s work.
“I loved it, some things different I’ve never seen before, some things are a little creepy” Villalta said. For upcoming art galleries in the Administration Building at Moorpark College check the events calendar on the Moorpark College website at www.moorparkcollege.com
