The Oxnard College Speaker Series has a new name, but English Professor Shelly Savren has organized another 12 weeks of inspirational orators for the spring semester.
Now called the Oxnard College Literature, Arts and Lecture Series, the program has a speaker each Wednesday starting Feb. 18 at 12:45 p.m. in LS-8 (the Clock Tower Auditorium).
Savren is excited for this semester’s line up and how people are actively asking to participate in the series.
“I have people on the faculty that are asking, “Can you get this person please?'” Savren said. “It’s kind of neat having people coming to me and asking if they can do this.”
The lecture series kicks off with a tribute to Black History Month, celebrated throughout the month of February. Savren and Dr. Emma Waits collaborated to welcome Pastor David Moore of the New Covenant Worship Center to the Oxnard College campus.
Moore plans to explore how the African American history in America affects basic human behavior.
“I want to indicate the impact of religion, particularly Christianity.” “I want to make a reference to how the African American religious community has had to develop an identity of its own, that in many ways is different from the Christianity that our ancestors were exposed to.”
Savren has high hopes for other diverse speakers to come to the campus.
“I thought, Let’s do a Holocaust Memorial Week.” “I heard about this survivor who is 88-years-old. I thought ‘Wow! He’s out there—I’d love to get him on campus.”
