Students interested in performing should know that the One Acts are coming back to the stage this semester.
Katherine Lewis, theatre professor at Moorpark College said that anyone is welcome to audition.
“It doesn’t matter if you haven’t done this before,” said Lewis. “With Open Call, you tell us when you are ready to read and then read.”
Everyone is reading from the same material and have freedom to decide when they want to give it a go.
One such student, Keegan Guy, 20, Communications Studies major, is coming back this semester to audition in hopes of getting cast in his friends show, “Party Animal.”
“I just want to have fun with it,” said Guy. “I am excited.”
Students who are casted in the Once Acts will have to enroll in the Theatre Production course THA M10, 31806.
Peter Mazzeo, Theatre Major, 20, is proud to be a part of this semesters shows, as his One Act, “The Final Spoiler,” a project he was hoping to run with, got put into the program.
This is Mazzeo’s second time involved in the One Acts and his first time writing and directing. He describes his One Act as philosophical.
Although he will be busy doing both writing and directing, he did not want to give up acting completely. Mazzeo decided to get heavily involved with the One Acts, dropping any involvement with the main stage production of Shakespeare’s “Henry IV” to focus all his energy in one area.
He encourages those auditioning to be confident.
“I advise them to make strong choices,” Mazzeo said. “You don’t always know what the director is thinking. If someone has a brilliant idea and just because it was not what I was thinking, I am going to want to see more of that.”
For those who have seen the One Acts before, the shows will be the same in nature but slightly different in genre and duration, as Lewis points out.
“There will be a mixture between short and long plays,” Lewis said. “The shortest will be 15 minutes and the longest over an hour.”
The genres for the One Acts vary from musicals to comedy, and melodramatic to dark comedy.
