David Lopez Sports editor Music brings people together, and that was goal of the 805 Locals concert that was held on Saturday, Nov. 20. “Music is the one thing that attracts people,” said Jaime Villicana 24, film major. “I don’t think if we brought books out here to read, people would be attracted to that.” The 805 Locals Concert was put on to rally the Oxnard College community to donate canned foods to support the homeless and needy. Both the Theatre Arts program and the Video Club hosted the concert. Villicana is the Vice President of the Video Club and Carlos Macen Jr., 32, a TV and film major is the President of the Theatre Arts program. “There are a lot of homeless people out there,” said Villicana. “We need any kind of canned food so that we can help just a little bit.” The idea for the concert was sparked when Macen was speaking with a friend of his. They both thought that they should do something for homeless people and others in need. The concert played host to musicians of all kinds, ranging from hip-hop to country and metal. Hip-hop artist Monteloco also performed at the concert. Monteloco went to Oxnard College and graduated in 2006 before moving on to California State University Northridge. He enjoyed performing in front of his hometown crowd. “They called me and told me they wanted me to come out and perform,” Monteloco said. “I’ve done this kind of work before and you know I am all for it especially since I am an alumni from Oxnard College.” Monteloco also thinks that the concert is beneficial for the city of Oxnard. “People want to see people involved and be active,” he said. “It costs money to be here but when it’s for an event, and as long as it fits into the schedule, we are more than willing to come out and be part of the community.” Macen thought that the concert proved to be a success. “It turned out to be pretty good, everyone loved it,” he said. “They even asked us to do another concert next semester.”
