Oxnard College’s head coach, Rey Reyes, believes that this may be the most physical volleyball team that Oxnard has ever had.
It sure didn’t seem that way when they lost to Antelope Valley College in three sets, 30-8, 30-11, and 30-16.
Oxnard College was led by Monica Helling who had 8 kills along with 2 blocks along with Vicky Seui who contributed in the game with 16 assists.
Oxnard (0-2) started off slow in the beginning and later seemed to warm up, but it wasn’t enough for them to pull through with the win.
“They played pretty good,” said Coach Reyes. “They got a lot of home jitters out of them and they were able to settle down later in the game.”
Antelope Valley (4-3) came out aggressive and easily won the first match against Oxnard. In the second game Antelope Valley came out and was leading 20-1, when Coach Reyes called a timeout.
After Oxnard came back they seemed to have a bit more energy as they managed to score eight points before they lost their second game.
“The group is talented and physical, but we just have to make some better adjustments,” said Coach Reyes. “We have great areas of improvement and we had some great sparks in the game.”
Oxnard College will now prepare for Bakersfield College at home on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 7 p.m.
