It took the Moorpark College Raiders only three matches to dismantle the Grossmont College Griffins Tuesday night, but in the end Moorpark was already looking ahead in the season.
Moorpark won the matches 30-23, 30-22 and closed off the game with a 30-18 defeat.
In the third match, Moorpark jumped out to its biggest lead of the night 6-0 off of serves by Sean Martin.
“I’m not usually a server, so I just looked to keep my serves in,” said Martin.
Adam Quinn came in later in the match to ultimately end the game when he served the match from 23-15 all the way up to 28-15. In the five serves he put over, two of them were aces.
“Just that we had a big lead and that I could go out there and try and work on my serve,” said Quinn. “(I could) have some fun and try and rip them and if I miss them, not a big deal.”
The Raiders came in to the game with a record of 6-2 and were looking to maintain their dominance. The Raiders coach Steve Burkhart believes that Moorpark has taken care of the teams that need to and that they have a rough patch coming around the corner.
Moorpark’s next match-up is against Orange Coast who is the reining second rank team in the state from last year. The Raiders will look to take down Orange Coast as they are facing their first tough opponent of the season.
However, Burkhart is happy with the way his teams have played for the first performance on the night. In particular he was impressed with his serves on the night.
“(Our serving has) become better for us,” said Burkhart. “I think we struggle at times, but tonight we did a little better job with that so I’m pleased with way were serving so we’ll see, you know against some other teams, we may not have the same results.”
The Moorpark Raiders have one day to prepare for Orange Coast and Burkhart said that his team will not change their daily practice for Orange Coast.
“No, for the most part what we are going to work hard tomorrow at practice trying to improve our serve receive and hopefully Thursday we’ll play strong.”
