With the threat of state cuts to community colleges looming ever closer, the administration is scrambling to minimize the impact to students. The waitlist for spring classes has been expanded and the summer class schedule reduced.
Moorpark College’s Vice President of Business Services Ray Di Guilio said despite their anticipations, the budget is still very much up in the air. “Anything is possible until the ink is dry on a piece of legislation,” Di Guilio said. “If we don’t have some action here, we’re going to be in the dark.” The current budget reduction is an estimated $7.8 million, with the district’s budget reduced by a total of 2%.
Ventura College Executive Vice President Ramiro Sanchez said the four-week summer class offerings have been reduced by two-thirds from last year. “Presently, we do not anticipate having to reduce our 6-week summer session,” Sanchez said. At Moorpark College compared to last year, the spring class schedule will see 8% to 10% cuts in each department.
