The 10th anniversary of the “Friends of the Arts: Small Wonders
Exhibition” will be held in the New Media Gallery from Nov. 28 to Dec. 12. The Ventura College Friends of the Arts is an on-campus artists organization.
During the “Small Wonders Exhibition,” members of the organization are allowed to submit two pieces of art no larger than 12 inches x 12 inches. The previous winners of Ventura College Friends of the Arts Scholarships will also be featured as guest artists in the exhibition.
All proceeds from sales will go to the Ventura College Friends of the Arts scholarship fund. The exhibition generates $10,000 in student scholarships that are awarded at the end of each year, said Sharon Coughran-Rayden, Ventura College teacher and art gallery director.
The “Dean de Cocker: Like the Yorktown” exhibit will be held in Gallery 2 from Nov. 14 to Dec. 12. Dean de Cocker’s work combines 2-D and 3-D mediums by incorporating three-dimensional objects into a two-dimensional work. Cocker utilizes everyday objects and combines them with racecar and World War II aircraft construction. “He’s a sculptor that uses airplane fabrication for his sculpture,” Coughran-Rayden said. The annual Ventura College student art sale will take place on Nov. 14. Coughran-Rayden said the sale is not exclusive to ceramics.
“We’ve had the sale for at least 30 years,” Myra Toth, Ventura College ceramics teacher said, “It has always been really enjoyable.
Eighty percent of the proceeds will go to the artist and the remaining 20 percent will go to the art department, Toth said.
Nancy Beswick, VC student enrolled in Life Painting I, participated in the sale last year, “I was really pleasantly surprised to have a piece of my artwork accepted by the public,” she said, “I would definitely recommend it to other students.”
