The musical “Chicago” will be debuting March 29 at the Performing Arts Center.
Approximately 150 students are preparing and rehearsing for their debut of the popular musical comedy. The student actors are also fulfilling the roles of costume designers, make-up artists, stage hands, musicians, and producers. All areas of the theater department are all working as a team to produce the musical comedy.
“Chicago” named after the city, takes place during the 1920s and involves a risqué chorus girl who gets caught up in a murder. Upon conviction, she goes to prison and by concocting a scheme with her cunning lawyer, ends up free.
“The stage version is more engaging and lively than the movie,” said Director John Loprieno, an acting teacher at Moorpark College. “The movie is bland, and this is a vaudeville setting. So we’re making the theatrer look like an old vaudeville house. This is one of the biggest productions I’ve done.”
“Chicago” the musical opens March 29 and will run through April 15. To experience the Moorpark Theater Department’s performance, you may purchase tickets or receive more information about the performances on the Performing Arts Center Website.
