If there is one thing that may be learned from the Moorpark College Raiders victory over the Oxnard College Condors on the women’s soccer field, it is that the scoreboard can’t always be trusted.
The board told the story of a close game, won only by one goal, 2-1. But in reality, the Raiders’ inability to finish shots on goal is what kept this game close. However, one cannot say that the Condors didn’t battle throughout this physical game.
The Raiders head coach Eric Privat pointed out that although the game was close on the scoreboard at the end of the first half, the Raiders had 10 shots and 3 corners in the first half. He compared this to the Condors’ 4 shots on goal.
“We had close to five chances to close out the game in the first 15 minutes of the game,” said Privat. “If we had scored we most likely would have relaxed.”
The Condors head coach Janet Cassidy believes that her team contended with the Raiders all though coming up short in the end.
“I think if we would have woke up earlier, the game would have had a different result,” said Cassidy.
The team captains for the Condors, Sammy Lane and Anna Alatorre, agreed with their head coach.
“I think we played a pretty good game,” said Lane. “It just wasn’t our best game we have played this season.”
The peak of the game had to be reached in the second half when the Condors caught up and tied the Raiders at one all. A cross came in from across the 18 yard box and met up with Alatorre’s head and then went past the Raiders goal keeper into the back of the net.
“It felt good to tie up the game,” said Alattore. “All I have to say is this: ‘I can’t wait till they come to our house.'”
The head coach for the Raiders took the time to appreciate the Condors goal and effort in the game.
“Oxnard fought with their weapon on us,” Privat said. “Only one team has scored on us beside them, and they scored an incredibly nice goal.”
The Raiders with this win move to 1-0 in conference play and 6-1-1 overall. The Condors are 0-1 in conference play and 2-3-1 overall.
Fans who were treated to this dandy will have one more shot to watch these two teams battle. On Tuesday Oct. 21, the two teams will duke it out at Oxnard College to decide if they will split the season matchups at a game a piece, or if the Raiders will travel to Oxnard and prove to be in the unstoppable form that they have been in lately.
