As the 2008 men’s soccer season is just underway, the Oxnard College Condors look to dominate the field and defend their 2007 Western State Conference title.
In a sport where injuries play a huge role in the outcome of a game, and games can end in a tie, Oxnard has the ability to compete year in and year out.
“Our coaches are doing a great job of establishing the program to be competitive every year,” said Tim Harrison the Director of Athletics at Oxnard College. “We have a quick team, we are very offensive minded.”
The success that the Condors enjoyed last year will not be easy to repeat. They had five players make WSC first team all conference, and Gabby Gonzales was named the WSC player of the year.
Only a few games into the season and a record near .500, Oxnard will have to improve their play if they want to be in command of the conference. They are staying true to their offensive attack with Willie Gutierrez scoring three goals alone against Sequoias in a non-conference game. The Condors were shut out by Santiago Canyon and finished fourth in the Mt. Sac invitational tournament despite suffering several injuries to key players.
Conference games begin Sep. 30, against Citrus. On Oct. 10, the Condors will travel to Moorpark for a rivalry game and will once again meet the Raiders when they play host to Moorpark on Nov. 4.
“We want student support,” said Harrison. “We want to get students out there.”
