I love the fact that many immigrants come to the U.S. to find a better life for not only themselves but for their families as well and so that they don’t have to live in a place that may not provide them a future.
The fact that many immigrants help out our economy by taking on jobs that a lot of other people wouldn’t take, is also important to me. I appreciate those who work hard through the scorching hot days of summer in fields instead of being at a beach drinking beer and watching girls. And I am especially proud of having a grandfather who crossed the border illegally to help provide his family with a future in the U.S. rather than wait to see what would happen. I know that if he didn’t cross, my family would be a lot different than what it is today, and I love my grandpa for doing it.
I am aware that it is not all great; I can also see the bad side. I do not like the fact that many qualified people that legally live in the U.S. are fired or turned away from jobs such as construction because they were able to hire migrants to do the job for less pay. I think it is sad when the majority of the people in our jails are people who came here illegally. This provides us less space for other criminals and the tax payers have to spend more money so that the state can providemore jails to fill the needs of overcrowding.
I see that immigrants want their kids to get an education so that they can help out their families and prepare themselves for the future, but with all the new kids and the majority of the kids not being able to speak English it becomes difficult at times. Not only does the school need to provide new materials such as desks, books and other school necessities, but they then have to look to hire teachers that are bilingual so that they can communicate with many of the new kids. With a lack of teachers in our society already, a bilingual one is hard to find sometimes.
Along side the recent topic with all the immigration talks that have been going on, is the Hispanic teenagers that got out of school to help protest for the immigration cause. I loathe that seven out of ten kids that I talked to, had no idea what they hell they were doing. Their response to what they were doing out of school was, “I don’t know, but it got me out of school.”
I am far from picking a side of who is right and who is wrong. I am still debating with myself on which side to pick, due to the facts and arguments provided by both sides. To me, there is no solution to this issue right now. It is something that will be talked about for years and years to come; I see no light at any end of a tunnel for this topic. I feel that everybody needs an opportunity to prove themselves and give others a chance at a better life. It just needs to be done a right way.
