Music brings people together, and that was goal of the 805 Locals concert that was held on Friday, Nov. 21.
Oxnard College student Stephen Alcantar, 41, was the main mind behind the concert with the goal of bringing in canned food for the needy and homeless in the Oxnard community.
“We had donations from just about everyone who attended,” said Alcantar.
805 Locals is a TV show produced by Alcantar and other students from the OCTV program on campus. The crew filmed the event and plans to televise it, along with interviews from Oxnard College faculty members, at a later date.
805 Locals also teamed up with the Theater Arts and Video club to host the concert.
“Music is the one thing attracts people,” said Vice President of the Video Club Jaime Villicana, 24, a film major. “I don’t think if we brought books out here to read, people wouldn’t be attracted to that.”
The concert also focused on supporting the local musical artists in Oxnard.
“These musicians are suffering too,” said Alcantar. “These artists eat, sleep and drink music, but they are in bad shape with the way the economy is going also.”
The musical event featured performances in a variety of genres from hip-hop to country, as well as metal. Alcantar wanted the event’s performers to be as diverse as possible. Performances included sets by Mantis, Sick Sens, West Coast Lil V, Marlon D, Amanda Marsh, Chino Brown, Drama Free, DJ Clos, DJ Orlando, DJ Ed, and Monteloco.
Most of the groups performing were local to the area, like Oxnard College alumnus Monteloco, who believes that the concert was for a good cause.
“They called me and told me they wanted me to come out and perform,” he said. “I’ve done this kind of work before and I am all for it, especially since I am an alumni from Oxnard College.”
The concert also took a lighter side when comic Andre Bekove came out to do a stand-up routine.
Once the canned goods had been collected, the groups turned to the Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) program for support in distributing the food.
“The EOPS helps people in financial need,” said Alcantar. “They were the best form of networking at the time.”The 805 Locals is looking to put on more concerts to benefit the
community in the near future.
